Description

Tricef is a prescription medication used to treat bacterial infections of the lungs, urinary tract, ears, throat, and infections that cause gonorrhea. Tricef belongs to a group of drugs called cephalosporin antibiotics, which work to stop the growth of bacteria in the body.

This medication is available in tablet, chewable tablet, capsule, and oral (by mouth) suspension forms and is taken once or twice daily, with or without food.

Common side effects of Tricef include rash, diarrhea, nausea, and upset stomach.

Dosage

Children weighing more than 45 kg or older than 12 years should be treated with the recommended adult dose. Tricef (cefixime) chewable tablets must be chewed or crushed before swallowing.

Otitis media should be treated with the chewable tablets or suspension. Clinical trials of otitis media were conducted with the chewable tablets or suspension, and the chewable tablets or suspension results in higher peak blood levels than the tablet when administered at the same dose.

Therefore, the tablet or capsule should not be substituted for the chewable tablets or suspension in the treatment of otitis media.

In the treatment of infections due to Streptococcus pyogenes, a therapeutic dosage of cefixime should be administered for at least 10 days.

Storage

Store at room temperature between 20 and 25 degrees C (68 and 77 degrees F) away from moisture and heat. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date. Keep out of the reach of children.

Moreover cefixime showed good activity with 86.1% of the strains with MIC less than or equal to 0.5 microgram/ml, and the growth curves demonstrated that the molecule possesses a bactericidal effect after 3 h. Concerning Group B streptococci, 70.3% of the strains showed a MIC less than or equal to 2 micrograms/ml. In conclusion cefixime demonstrates good activity on beta-haemolytic streptococci, particularly those of Group A.

Among the cephalosporins, BAY v 3522 was the most active against gram-positive cocci and cefixime was the most active against gram-negative bacilli; BAY v 3522 was similar in activity to amoxicillin-clavulanate against most species.

Antimicrobial drug resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae has become an increasing public health problem. Hence, surveillance of resistance development is of crucial importance to implement adequate treatment guidelines. Data on the spread of antibiotic resistance among gonococcal isolates in Germany, however, is scarce. In a resistance surveillance study conducted by the Paul Ehrlich Society for Chemotherapy between October 2010 and December 2011, 23 laboratories all over Germany were requested to send N. gonorrhoeae isolates to the study laboratory in Frankfurt am Main. Species verification was performed biochemically using ApiNH and with Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization-Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed using the Etest method. For molecular epidemiological analysis, N. gonorrhoeae strains were genotyped by means of N. gonorrhoeae multi-antigen sequence typing. A total of 213 consecutive gonococcal isolates were analyzed in this nationwide study. Applying EUCAST breakpoints, high resistance rates were found for ciprofloxacin (74%) and tetracycline (41%). Penicillin non-susceptibility was detected in 80% of isolates. The rate of azithromycin resistance was 6%, while all strains were susceptible to spectinomycin, cefixime, and ceftriaxone. Molecular typing of gonococcal isolates revealed a great heterogeneity of 99 different sequence types (ST), but ST1407 predominated (n=39). This is the first comprehensive German multi-centre surveillance study on antibiotic susceptibility and molecular epidemiology of N. gonorrhoeae with implications for antibiotic choice for treatment of gonorrhoea. Clinical isolates of Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Moraxella catarrhalis were gathered from 19 different clinical laboratories throughout the continental United States. The in vitro activities of 12 orally administered antimicrobial agents were compared by broth microdilution tests with 3,151 bacterial isolates. Among 890 H. influenzae isolates, 30% were capable of producing beta-lactamase enzymes (12 to 41% in different medical centers). Ninety-two percent of 698 M. catarrhalis strains were beta-lactamase positive. Of 799 S. pneumoniae isolates, 15% were intermediate in susceptibility to penicillin and 7% were resistant to penicillin. The prevalence of penicillin-susceptible pneumococci in different institutions ranged from 63 to 95%. Only 1% of 764 S. pyogenes isolates were resistant to the Klabion 500 Mg Dawkowanie macrolides, but 5% of S. pneumoniae isolates were macrolide resistant. Only 71% of 58 penicillin-resistant S. pneumoniae isolates were erythromycin susceptible, whereas 97% of the 622 penicillin-susceptible strains were erythromycin susceptible. Penicillin-resistant pneumococci were also relatively resistant to the cephalosporins and amoxicillin. Penicillin-susceptible pneumococci were susceptible to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid (MIC for 90% of isolates tested [MIC90], < or = 0.12/0.06 microgram/ml), cefixime (MIC90, 0.25 microgram/ml), cefuroxime axetil (MIC90, < or = 0.5 microgram/ml), cefprozil (MIC90, < or = 0.5 micrograms/ml), cefaclor (MIC90, 0.5 microgram/ml), and loracarbef (MIC90, 1.0 microgram/ml). Most strains of the other species remained susceptible to the study drugs other than amoxicillin.

The prevalence and concentration of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) in cattle faeces (n=605) at the time of slaughter was studied in Shimane Prefecture, Japan on a monthly basis between April 2000 and March 2001. Screening with stx-PCR determined a prevalence of 37.5%. After analysis of spread faeces and enriched samples on cefixime, tellurite and sorbitol-MacConkey agar using HCl treatment, 114 STEC strains were singly or concomitantly isolated from 97 cattle (15.9%). Of the 605 cattle, 31 (5.1%) harbored O26:H11, O111:H-, O121:H19 or O157:H7, which had the stx1 and/or stx2 and eae and hlyA Clonamox Medicine genes, and 7 (23%) of these 31 cattle were high level carriers that contained these typical STEC at concentrations of 10(5)-10(8) CFU/g of faeces. The predominant serotype was O26:H11 (20 strains) and the second most frequent was O157:H7 (9 strains). Of the 605 cattle, 68 (11.2%) harboured 36 other serotypes and 6 (5.9%) of the 67 cattle were high level carriers. As a comparison between the prevalence of STEC and the faecal pH, it was demonstrated that STEC can be isolated from cattle with a wide range of faecal pH values. The presence of a high-carriage animal at the abattoir increases the potential risk of meat contamination during the slaughtering process, regardless of faecal pH.
