Also known as:  Augmentin.

Description

Clamentin is a brand name for an antibiotic, called co-amoxiclav, that is used to treat a wide range of conditions, from bronchitis to Lyme disease. It is one of the most commonly prescribed antibiotics for children, frequently dispensed for ear infections.

The drug is a combination of two active ingredients: amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. Together, the drugs fight bacteria that would ordinarily be resistant to amoxicillin alone.

Dosage

Clamentin is typically taken orally, in pill form for adults, and in a liquid (often flavored) suspension for little children. Doctors prescribe the drug so often because it works against many types of disease-causing bacteria.

"When I travel I always have some Clamentin in my travel bag," because it works against so many common infections, said Dr. Alasdair Geddes, an emeritus professor of infectious diseases at the University of Birmingham in England, who ran some of the first clinical trials of Clamentin.

Clamentin is one of the workhorses of the pediatrician's office, prescribed for ear infections that are resistant to amoxicillin alone, sore throats and certain eye infections. The drug is also a powerful agent against bronchitis and tonsillitis caused by bacteria (though many cases of sore throat are viral in origin).

In addition, the drug can fight pneumonia, urinary tract infections, gonorrhea, and skin infections. The drug has also been seen as a good potential candidate for treatment of Lyme disease, chlamydia, sinusitis, gastritis and peptic ulcers, according to a 2011 study in the International Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Though Clamentin hasn't been conclusively shown to be safe during pregnancy, some studies suggest it is unlikely to do harm to pregnant women or their fetuses, according to a 2004 study in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology. Women who are pregnant should check with their doctors before taking the drug. The Food and Drug Administration classifies Clamentin as a class B drug, meaning there is no evidence for harm.

Contraindications

Clamentin is contraindicated in patients with a history of serious hypersensitivity reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis or Stevens-Johnson syndrome) to amoxicillin, clavulanate or to other beta lactam antibacterial drugs (e.g., penicillins and cephalosporins).

Periodontal diseases are infections and thus systemically administered antibiotics are often employed as adjuncts for their control. There are conflicting reports as to whether these agents provide a therapeutic benefit.

Endometritis is the commonest postpartum complication and is one of the leading causes of maternal morbidity, if not mortality. The object of the present clinical trial was to assess the efficiency of single-agent therapy with Amox-CA (Augmentin) (formulation which includes a beta-lactamase inhibitor), against standard treatment which necessarily combines two or three antibiotics depending on the clinical severity of the case. 101 patients were evaluated in this comparative prospective randomized study. The mild forms were defined by a temperature between 37.9 and 38.4 degrees C and the severe forms by a temperature of more than 38.5 degrees C (which alone required treatment with three antibiotics). The time until the return of apyrexia and the clinical cure rate, as well as duration of treatment, were identical in both groups. Tolerance was good: no side effect requiring discontinuation of treatment occurred. In the population value, the use of a single-agent therapy with amoxycillin/clavulanic acid is not significantly different from a double or triple-agent regimen, and the convenience is increase.

This is a multicenter, randomized, double-blind controlled trial, comparing amoxicillin-clavulanic acid administered for 7 days to a placebo. Patients included are those with documented or suspected COLD, exclusive of other bronchial or lung disease, and admitted for acute exacerbation, in the absence of overt sepsis or broncho-pneumonia, and having no other organ failure. Patients recently hospitalized, having received antibiotics for > 24 h, or on long-term steroids will not be included. Co-interventions (bronchodilators, steroids) are controlled for. Patients will be administered the antibiotic or placebo within 24 hours of admission.

Ninety percent of cases of peritonsillar abscesses complicated angina. Forty-nine percent of patients had no previous antibiotic therapy, 9% had a previous history of peritonsillar abscess, 62% were treated in the emergency department, and fever was present in 64% of cases. The diagnosis was clinical in 98% of cases. The average hospitalization stay lasted 2 days. Sixty-five percent of patients had one needle aspiration of the abscess, 35% had surgical drainage with local anaesthesia. The needle aspiration was negative in 14% of cases. In 29% of cases one bacterium was identified. The patients were completely cured in 10 days. Forty-five percent of patients underwent tonsillectomy at a later date.

Fluted pumpkin (Telfairia occidentalis) is a minimally-processed green leafy vegetable traditionally used for its antianaemic properties in the form of leaf juice without a heating or inactivation step before consumption. The aim of the study was to assess the presence of surface microbiota on T. occidentalis leaves and also to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility of isolated organisms. Bacterial contaminants on 50 samples of T. occidentalis leaves were isolated and characterized using standard biochemical methods and the antimicrobial susceptibility of isolated organisms was determined using the antibiotic disc diffusion assay. The results obtained show that the leaves of T. occidentalis is contaminated with organisms which included Enterobacter agglomerans (25.9%), Proteus vulgaris (24.9%), Klebsiella spp. (2.6%), and Serratia liquefaciens (2.1%). Other bacterial isolates recovered in order of frequency included: Staphylococcus spp. (33.7%), Bacillus spp. (8.3%), and Pseudomonas fluorescens (2.6%). Of the 193 bacterial isolates from the leaves of T. occidentalis samples tested for antimicrobial resistance, all (100%) were found to be resistant to ampicillin, cloxacillin, augmentin, erythromycin, and tetracycline while 96% of the isolates were resistant to cephalothin. Resistance to trimethoprim (93%) and gentamicin (83%) was also observed. Approximately, 22% of the isolates were resistant to ciprofloxacin; however, only 11 (5.8%) were resistant to ofloxacin. Thus, uncooked T. occidentalis is a potential source of highly-resistant epiphytic bacteria which could be opportunistic pathogens in consumers.

Our fulfillment of Koch's postulates for cytotoxin-producing K. oxytoca suggests that it is the causative organism in at least some cases of antibiotic-associated hemorrhagic colitis. Infection with K. oxytoca should be considered in patients with antibiotic-associated colitis who are negative for C. difficile.

Previous research has shown that antibiotic usage in patients with superficial sharp lacerations has no influence over infection rate. This study is a prospective controlled trial, using systematic allocation, of 250 patients of which 113 Fromilid Uno 500 Mg Cena received co-amoxiclav (Augmentin) and 137 did not. Special emphasis was placed on wound debridement and irrigation. All sharp soft tissue lacerations including those with nerve, tendon and muscle damage were entered into the trial. The results show a low overall infection rate of 4%. The infection rate in the group treated with antibiotics was 5% and 3.2% in the group who received no antibiotics. Lacerations operated on up to 48 h from the injury were included and there was no correlation between the length of time waited and the infection rate. We conclude that antibiotics are an unnecessary adjunct in the treatment of sharp lacerations of the hand and upper limb, provided meticulous surgical debridement is performed.

The concurrence of acute coronary syndrome with allergy or hypersensitivity as well as with anaphylactic or anaphylactoid reactions is increasingly encountered in daily clinical practice. There are several reports associating mast cell activation with acute cardiovascular events in adults. This was first described by Kounis as 'allergic angina syndrome',progressing to 'allergic myocardial infarction'. The main mechanism proposed is the vasospasm of coronary arteries. We present a case of a 28-year-old man who was admitted to our hospital with thoracic pain and dyspnoea. The symptoms recurred after simultaneous use of 1 g amoxicillin/clavulanic acid orally and 1 Ilosone Gel Resenha g ampicillin/sulbactam parenterally for tonsillitis the night before presentation and on the morning of admission.

Recently published guidance from NICE highlights that antibiotic prophylaxis is no longer required for patients with structural heart disease at risk of infective endocarditis. The American Heart Association has published similarly less interventive guidance. Individuals with pulmonary arteriovenous malformations and hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia are at risk of brain abscess from dental bacteraemias. In this article we explore why these patients do not fall into the groups considered by NICE and provide recommendations to reduce their risks of dental bacteraemias, including Ziana Yeast Infection optimising dental hygiene and use of antibiotic prophylaxis prior to dental procedures.

Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis in cirrhosis is a serious complication that demands urgent attention. We report here a prospective study of the treatment of 27 episodes of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis in 22 cirrhotic patients with amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. The infection of ascitic fluid was diagnosed by a positive culture plus an ascitic neutrophil count exceeding 75/microliters, or by an ascitic neutrophil count exceeding 500/microliters. The infection was treated with 1 gm amoxicillin and 0.2 gm clavulanic acid every 6 hr for 14 days. In 17 cases (63%), bacteria were isolated from the ascitic fluid. All the bacteria isolated were sensitive to amoxicillin and clavulanic acid, whereas in five cases they were resistant to amoxicillin alone (Escherichia coli in two cases, Klebsiella pneumoniae in two cases and Bacteroides fragilis in one case). Cure of the infection was achieved in 23 episodes (85%) after 14 days' treatment; 17 patients (63%) were able to leave the hospital. Fourteen of 20 patients (70%) treated for the first episode of infection died within 1 yr: eight from infection, two from gastrointestinal hemorrhage, one from infection and hemorrhage and three from tumors Supreme Pcl Hoodie Review . One patient who had repeated infections underwent liver transplantation and has not had any infectious complications 1.5 yr after surgery. Amoxicillin and clavulanic acid may be an effective first-line therapy for ascitic fluid infection in cirrhosis. Nevertheless, the 1-yr prognosis continues to be grave and the severity of the underlying liver disease remains the most important determinant for survival.

Dental caries remain one of the most common disorders of childhood in the United States. Often nurse practitioners (NPs) will see children who are suffering from the complications of a dental carie, such as a dental abscess and/or cellulitis. This article describes the case of a 5-year-old girl who presented at an evening clinic with tooth pain, fever, and facial swelling. Three treatment choices are discussed: (1) 400 mg of amoxicillin (Augmentin), by mouth, with comfort measures, and return to the clinic in the morning; (2) 2 g of ceftriaxone by injection, with comfort measures, and return to the clinic in the morning; (3) or hospitalize via emergency department for intravenous fluids and antibiotics. The treatment Cefadroxil Yeast Infection that was chosen not only takes into account the disease process, but also the impact of this choice on the family. A model for the progression of dental caries in low-income groups with recommendations for prevention is also presented.
