Cavumox is a brand name for an antibiotic, called co-amoxiclav, that is used to treat a wide range of conditions, from bronchitis to Lyme disease. It is one of the most commonly prescribed antibiotics for children, frequently dispensed for ear infections.

The drug is a combination of two active ingredients: amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. Together, the drugs fight bacteria that would ordinarily be resistant to amoxicillin alone.


Cavumox may be taken without regard to meals; however, absorption of clavulanate potassium is enhanced when Cavumox is administered at the start of a meal. To minimize the potential for gastrointestinal intolerance, Cavumox should be taken at the start of a meal.

The usual adult dose is one 500-mg tablet of Cavumox every 12 hours or one 250-mg tablet of Cavumox every 8 hours. For more severe infections and infections of the respiratory tract, the dose should be one 875-mg tablet of Cavumox every 12 hours or one 500-mg tablet of Cavumox every 8 hours. Adults who have difficulty swallowing may be given the 125 mg/5 mL or 250 mg/5 mL suspension in place of the 500-mg tablet. The 200 mg/5 mL suspension or the 400 mg/5 mL suspension may be used in place of the 875-mg tablet.

Two 250-mg tablets of Cavumox should not be substituted for one 500-mg tablet of Cavumox. Since both the 250-mg and 500-mg tablets of Cavumox contain the same amount of clavulanic acid (125 mg, as the potassium salt), two 250-mg tablets are not equivalent to one 500-mg tablet of Cavumox.

The 250-mg tablet of Cavumox and the 250-mg chewable tablet should not be substituted for each other, as they are not interchangeable. The 250-mg tablet of Cavumox and the 250-mg chewable tablet do not contain the same amount of clavulanic acid (as the potassium salt). The 250-mg tablet of Cavumox contains 125 mg of clavulanic acid, whereas the 250-mg chewable tablet contains 62.5 mg of clavulanic acid.

A high percentage of patients with mononucleosis who receive amoxicillin develop an erythematous skin rash. Thus, Cavumox should not be administered to patients with mononucleosis.

The possibility of superinfections with fungal or bacterial pathogens should be considered during therapy. If superinfection occurs, amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium should be discontinued and appropriate therapy instituted.

Cavumox Chewable tablets and Cavumox Powder for Oral Solution contain aspartame which contains phenylalanine. Each 200 mg chewable tablet of Cavumox contains 2.1 mg phenylalanine; each 400 mg chewable tablet contains 4.2 mg phenylalanine; each 5 mL of either the 200 mg/5 mL or 400 mg/5 mL oral suspension contains 7 mg phenylalanine. The other formulations of Cavumox do not contain phenylalanine.

The antimicrobial susceptibility of 1078 isolates of Haemophilus influenzae, 348 Streptococcus pneumoniae and 258 Moraxella catarrhalis was determined. Overall 15.1% of H. influenzae produced beta-lactamase; 98.8% were susceptible to co-amoxiclav, 85.8% to cefaclor, 96% to clarithromycin and 100% to ciprofloxacin. The majority (94.2%) of M. catarrhalis produced beta-lactamase. The overall prevalence of low-level penicillin resistance (MIC = 0.12-1 mg/L) amongst isolates of S. pneumoniae was 3.4% and that of high-level resistance (MIC > or = 2 mg/L) was 3.7%. Most (96.3%) of the isolates of S. pneumoniae were susceptible to amoxycillin (MIC < or = 0.5 mg/L), 96% to cefaclor (MIC < or = 8 mg/L), 90.7% to clarithromycin (MIC < or = 0.25 mg/L) and 89% to ciprofloxacin (MIC < or = 1 mg/L).

The response rate was 55.5%. Surgical antimicrobial prophylaxis was used in 97.5% of departments, and 85% departments justified prophylaxis based on guideline. The timing of the first dosage was within 2 h of operation in 95.0% of departments and 36.7% of all departments administered more than 2 doses of SAP in operations that lasted less than 4 h of all respondents. There was significant association between Pseudomonas aeruginosa with cefuroxime use and Bacteriodes fragilis with co amoxiclav use.

The antibacterial susceptibility was determinated by Stokes method and by the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) using an agar dilution method.
