Amodex (Augmentin)

Rating of sales:

Also known as:  Augmentin.

Amodex is a brand name for an antibiotic, called co-amoxiclav, that is used to treat a wide range of conditions, from bronchitis to Lyme disease. It is one of the most commonly prescribed antibiotics for children, frequently dispensed for ear infections.

The drug is a combination of two active ingredients: amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. Together, the drugs fight bacteria that would ordinarily be resistant to amoxicillin alone.

Neonates and Infants: The recommended dose of Amodex is 30 mg/kg/day divided every 12 hours, based on the amoxicillin component. Experience with the 200 mg/5 mL formulation in this age group is limited, and thus, use of the 125 mg/5 mL oral suspension is recommended.

Patients Aged 12 weeks (3 months) and Older: See dosing regimens provided in Table 1. The every 12 hour regimen is recommended as it is associated with significantly less diarrhea [see Clinical Studies (14.2)]. However, the every 12 hour suspension (200 mg/5 mL and 400 mg/5 mL) and chewable tablets (200 mg and 400 mg) contain aspartame and should not be used by phenylketonurics.

Patients Weighing 40 kg or More: Pediatric patients weighing 40 kg or more should be dosed according to adult recommendations.

The 250-mg tablet of Amodex should not be used until the child weighs at least 40 kg,due to the different amoxicillin to clavulanic acid ratios in the 250-mg tablet of Amodex (250/125) versus the 250-mg chewable tablet of Amodex (250/62.5).

A high percentage of patients with mononucleosis who receive amoxicillin develop an erythematous skin rash. Thus, Amodex should not be administered to patients with mononucleosis.

The possibility of superinfections with fungal or bacterial pathogens should be considered during therapy. If superinfection occurs, amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium should be discontinued and appropriate therapy instituted.

Amodex Chewable tablets and Amodex Powder for Oral Solution contain aspartame which contains phenylalanine. Each 200 mg chewable tablet of Amodex contains 2.1 mg phenylalanine; each 400 mg chewable tablet contains 4.2 mg phenylalanine; each 5 mL of either the 200 mg/5 mL or 400 mg/5 mL oral suspension contains 7 mg phenylalanine. The other formulations of Amodex do not contain phenylalanine.

Ten (7%) out of 143 consecutive interventions in orthognathic surgery were complicated by a SSI. All the SSI were secondary to a mandibular ramus sagittal split osteotomy. The two significantly correlated risk factors with the SSI in multivariate analysis were the length of surgery and the type of antibiotic prophylaxis.

Samples were taken under strictly anaerobic conditions from the root canals of 22 patients having a tooth in which necrotic pulp was associated with an inflammatory peri-apical lesion an optical periodontitis. In the majority of cases (85%), these lesions were chronic and the pulp chamber was closed. One hundred and two strains were isolated, 71.7% of the bacteria being obligate anaerobes and 49.8% being Gram-negative bacilli. Their ability to produce beta-lactamases was tested and 8.8% gave a positive reaction in a cefinase test. These cefinase positive strains were nevertheless susceptible to 3rd-generation cephalosporins (cefoxitin) and to amoxicillin-clavulanate, with the exception of M. Morganii.

On the basis of the information gained from the literature the amoxicillin/clavulanic acid combination has attained the leading position in dentistry and outpatient oral surgery practices as regards the order of application of antibiotics. The explanation for this may be that in 60-70% of the cases of odontogenic inflammation, besides the pathogenic anaerobic bacteria there is an increasing necessity to eliminate beta-lactamase-producing bacteria as well. The authors applied the amoxicillin/clavulanic acid combination (Aktil Duo 625 mg) to support the--primarily surgical--treatment of 14 oral and dental surgery conditions on a total of 60 patients. After analysing the results and side effects they came to the conclusion that the application of the mentioned combination was very successful in dentistry and outpatient oral surgery practices.

Early review of antimicrobial prescribing decisions within 48 h is recommended to reduce the overall use of unnecessary antibiotics, and in particular the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics. When parenteral antibiotics are used, blood culture results provide valuable information to help decide whether to continue, alter or stop antibiotics at 48 h. The objective of this study was to investigate the frequency of parenteral antibiotic use, broad spectrum antibiotic use and use of blood cultures when parenteral antibiotics are initiated in patients admitted via the Emergency Department.

We observed a change Amoxidal Duo Suspension Posologia in the consumption and profile of the antimicrobial agents used in our setting, probably related to changes in the population, increases in parenteral treatment and changes in the criteria for treatment of terminal patients. The establishment of controls for antibiotic use in long-term care centers would lead to improvements in the quality of the care provided.

A 10-day regimen of cefdinir 14 mg/kg QD or 7 mg/kg BID was as clinically effective overall as a 10-day regimen of amoxicillin/ clavulanate 40/10 mg/kg/ Amoxidal 500 Mg Prospecto day divided TID in the treatment of tympanocentesis-confirmed, nonrefractory AOM in children. These data suggest that cefdinir QD may be a better alternative than cefdinir BID for refractory AOM. Both dosing regimens of cefdinir were associated with significantly fewer gastrointestinal adverse reactions than was amoxicillin/clavulanate.

We present a case of acute generalized exanthematous pustolosis (AGEP) induced by amoxicillin-clavulanate. Clinical diagnosis was confirmed by Kesium 125 Mg symptoms presentation and  histological features (Euroscar score point compatible with definite diagnosis). Patch testing performer six months later confirmed sensitization to the culprit drug and showed positivity also to other beta-lactam antibiotics (penicillin G and cephalexin). We believe that a T cell delayed response to betalactams common ring could be involved.

Fifty-four Tetracycline 250 Mg patients (age range, 18 to 40 years) underwent bimaxillary orthognatic surgery. After randomization, a placebo (n = 19), 2,200 mg amoxicillin-clavulanic acid (n = 18), or 1,500 mg cefuroxime (n = 17) was administered in a double-blind fashion. During the first month, the postoperative course was observed according to the clinical parameters of infection, total leukocyte count and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR).

amodex reviews 2016-12-21

This report describes the results of a review that was done to compare, from the patients' and their parents' perspective, costs involved in treating acute otitis media in children with amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium or cefpodoxime proxetil. The following costs were included in the analysis: average wholesale price of the initial antibiotic prescribed, cost of initial and follow-up physician visits for additional treatment, antibiotics for treatment failures, and medications and products required to manage side effects. The amount of time that parents were required to take off work or school to deal with treatment failures or side effects in their children and the number of times that parents phoned the physician about side effects were also monitored. The acquisition costs of the initial antibiotics were slightly higher for patients who received cefpodoxime proxetil than for those who were given amoxicillin/clavulanate. However, the total costs were greater with amoxicillin/clavulanate therapy. In addition, the time that parents were required to take to deal with treatment failures or side effects in their children was greater in the amoxicillin/clavulanate group. More parents from the amoxicillin/clavulanate group also phoned their physicians about side effects. The results of this review confirm that there are many factors in addition to acquisition cost that must be considered when determining the total cost of treating a patient with a specific drug.
