Altacef is used for treating bacterial infections (sinus, skin, lung, urinary tract, ear, and throat). It may also be used to treat Lyme disease and gonorrhea. Ceftin is a cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by interfering with the formation of the bacteria's cell wall so that the wall ruptures, resulting in the death of the bacteria.

Altacef eye drops and eye ointment are used to treat bacterial eye infections. Eye infections are a common cause of conjunctivitis. In conjunctivitis, your eye becomes inflamed, feels gritty, and may water more than usual. The white of your eye may look red, and your eyelids can become swollen and stuck together with a discharge when you wake up in the morning. Only one eye may be infected to begin with, but it often spreads to both eyes.

Most cases of infective conjunctivitis clear within a few days without treatment. For more severe infections, or for infections which do not clear on their own, an antibiotic eye drop or ointment such as Altacef can be helpful.

Altacef works by helping to kill the bacteria which are causing the infection. It is available on prescription. You can also buy the drops and the ointment from a pharmacy, without a prescription, if it is for conjunctivitis in an adult or a child over 2 years of age. Do not use Altacef eye drops or ointment for a child under 2 years old, unless it has been prescribed by a doctor.


Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label.

You may take Altacef tablets with or without meals.

Altacef oral suspension (liquid) must be taken with food.

Shake the oral liquid well just before you measure a dose. To be sure you get the correct dose, measure the liquid with a marked measuring spoon or medicine cup, not with a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.

If you switch from using the tablet form to using the oral suspension (liquid) form of Altacef, you may not need to use the same exact dosage in number of milligrams. The medication may not be as effective unless you use the exact form and strength your doctor has prescribed.

Use this medication for the entire length of time prescribed by your doctor. Your symptoms may get better before the infection is completely treated. Altacef will not treat a viral infection such as the common cold or flu.

This medication can cause you to have false results with certain medical tests, including urine glucose (sugar) tests. Tell any doctor who treats you that you are using Altacef.


Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine. Overdose symptoms may include seizure (black-out or convulsions).


Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F) away from moisture and heat. Keep container tightly closed. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date. Keep out of the reach of children.

Side effect occurrence does not only depend on medication you are taking, but also on your overall health and other factors.


Contact your doctor right away if stomach pain or cramps, severe diarrhea, or bloody stools occur during treatment or within several months after treatment with Altacef. Do not treat diarrhea without first checking with your doctor.

The tablet and oral suspension forms of Altacef are not equivalent. Do not substitute one for the other.

Altacef only works against bacteria; it does not treat viral infections (eg, the common cold).

Be sure to use Altacef for the full course of treatment. If you do not, the medicine may not clear up your infection completely. The bacteria could also become less sensitive to this or other medicines. This could make the infection harder to treat in the future.

Long-term or repeated use of Altacef may cause a second infection. Tell your doctor if signs of a second infection occur. Your medicine may need to be changed to treat this.

Diabetes patients - Altacef may cause the results of some tests for urine glucose to be wrong. Ask your doctor before you change your diet or the dose of your diabetes medicine.

Hormonal birth control (eg, birth control pills) may not work as well while you are using Altacef. To prevent pregnancy, use an extra form of birth control (eg, condoms).

Lab tests, including liver function, kidney function, and complete blood cell count, may be performed while you use Altacef. These tests may be used to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.

Altacef should not be used in children younger 3 months; safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Altacef while you are pregnant. Altacef is found in breast milk. Do not breastfeed while taking Altacef.

Acute pyelonephritis in pregnancy is related to anemia, septicemia, transient renal dysfunction, and pulmonary insufficiency. A randomized study was conducted to assess the clinical and microbiological efficacy of a single dose of fosfomycin trometamol for the treatment of asymptomatic bacteriuria in the second trimester of pregnancy compared with a 5-day regimen of cefuroxime axetyl. Forty-four women received fosfomycin trometamol and 40 women received cefuroxime axetyl. There were no statistically significant differences between both groups regarding the mean age and mean duration of pregnancy. Therapeutic success was achieved in 93.2% of the patients treated with fosfomycin trometamol vs 95% of those treated with cefuroxime axetyl. A single dose of fosfomycin trometamol is a safe and effective alternative in the treatment of asymptomatic urinary tract infections in the second trimester of pregnancy.

This investigation describes the development of an intragastric drug-delivery system for cefuroxime axetil. The 3(2) full factorial design was employed to evaluate contribution of hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) K4M/HPMC K100 LV ratio (polymer blend) and sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) on drug release from HPMC matrices. Tablets were prepared using direct compression technique. Formulations were evaluated for in vitro buoyancy and drug release study using United States Pharmacopeia (USP) 24 paddletype dissolution apparatus using 0.1N HCl as a dissolution medium. Multiple regression analysis was performed for factorial design batches to evaluate the response. All formulations had floating lag times below 2 minutes and constantly floated on dissolution medium for more than 8 hours. It was found that polymer blend and SLS significantly affect the time required for 50% of drug release, percentage drug release at 12 hours, release rate constant, and diffusion exponent (P<.05). Also linear relationships were obtained between the amount of HPMC K100 LV and diffusion exponent as well as release rate constant. Kinetic treatment to dissolution profiles revealed drug release ranges from anomalous transport to case 1 transport, which was mainly dependent on both the independent variables.

Cefpodoxime proxetil is an oral third generation cephalosporin with a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity. The drug has in vitro activity against many common Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens associated with common paediatric infections, making the drug a useful option for empirical therapy. In randomised controlled trials conducted in children with acute otitis media, oral cefpodoxime proxetil 8 to 10 mg/kg/day (usually administered in 2 divided doses) for 5 to 10 days was at least as effective as standard regimens of amoxicillin/ clavulanic acid, cefixime, cefuroxime axetil or cefaclor as assessed by either clinical or bacteriological criteria. Cefpodoxime 8 to 10 mg/kg/day (administered in 2 divided doses) for 5 to 10 days was at least as effective as standard 10-day regimens of penicillin V in the treatment of children with pharyngitis and/or tonsillitis. Significant differences in favour of cefpodoxime proxetil were demonstrated in terms of clinical (1 study) and bacteriological (2 studies) criteria. The clinical efficacy of 5 days of treatment with cefpodoxime proxetil is similar to that of 10 days of treatment with penicillin V. In children with lower respiratory tract infections (primarily pneumonia), clinical and bacteriological efficacy rates achieved with cefpodoxime proxetil treatment were similar to those produced by cefuroxime axetil or amoxicillin/clavulanic acid in randomised controlled trials. Cefpodoxime proxetil also demonstrated clinical efficacy in paediatric patients with skin and soft tissue infections. In randomised studies that included both adults and children with a variety of infections (e.g. abscess, atheroma, furuncle and carbuncle, infected wounds, cellulitis), cefpodoxime proxetil showed efficacy similar to that of cefuroxime axetil or cefaclor. Cefpodoxime proxetil is well tolerated by paediatric patients, with adverse events (primarily gastrointestinal tract disturbances and skin rashes) that are consistent with those reported for other oral cephalosporins.
